Nzulezu – Historic Stilt settlement on Lake Tadane
ca 6 Hours
Depart after breakfast for the brief car ride to Beyin. Here you are greeted by a friendly local guide who will board you safely onto a canoe or small motorboat. Enjoy the ensuing scenic journey through mystical mangroves and over the lake to your destination, the Nzulezu Stilt Settlement.
This picturesque village is situated in the center of LAKE TADANE with its buildings supported entirely upon natural stilts. Peopled with its markedly friendly inhabitants, it is a living testimony of a functioning and fluid relationship between MAN and NATURE.
The original inhabitants of Nzulezu are said to have migrated from the north during the ancient GANA EMPIRE (first mentioned in the 9th century). Some historians say NZULEZU was founded as a refuge for Africans seeking protection from the transatlantic slave trade (mid 1600 – 1800’s).
Mysterious tales of its powerful, protective energy swirl around LAKE TADANE itself. The exact facts of NZULEZU’s origin may remain cloudy. Undisputed is the promise of a memorable day filled with unique sights, remarkable history, traditional rites and knowledge, flavours, fauna and altogether excitement.*
Combine this excursion with a visit to the FORT APOLLONIA MUSEUM of NZEMA CULTURE and HISTORY.
*TRIGGER WARNING! Please note that in the last years NZULEZU has fallen into a miserable state of disrepair. Some aspects may prove triggering for sensitive persons. Also be advised that NZULEZU has their own independent prices for entry.
